Economic Recession Have No Fear Personal Branding is Here - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career The mainstream media has reported long-term unemployment and talk of an economic recession for the United States. Since this is a blog about personal branding, my goal is to capture any piece of news that may positively or negatively impact your brand now or in the future. Here are the facts (pain points): The long-term unemployed â" those who have been seeking work for at least six months â" represented 18.3 percent of the nationâs 7.65 million men and women looking for jobs. That was up from 16.2 percent a year ago. The nationâs employers eliminated 17,000 jobs in January, which is the first decline in the work force in more than four years, and the strongest signal yet that the United States may be in the early stages of a recession. By December there were 376,000 fewer jobs ____ My Opinion Recently, Anita Bruzzese interviewed me to discuss these issues, as they are a rising concern to the general population and career management. You can view a copy of the interview here and here, so far. Anita: With the uncertainties in the economy right now, do you think it makes career branding more popular than ever? Why or why not? Me: With the economic uncertainties that plague corporations, they will do far less hiring this year, as well as be more selective in which candidates they choose. The individuals who have properly branded themselves, both online and offline, will be secure and have the best chance of claiming what jobs are left. As people become more concerned and suddenly alarmed by the economy, they will be forced into taking a second look at their careers. Personal branding is more popular than ever because we have more channels to convey our value and expertise to others, such as blogs and social networks. The more people view examples of people building their brands, the more they will realize how powerful it truly can be. More thoughts Beneath the surface of the recession there is still a war for talent. In order to companies to be innovative and ahead of the curve, they need to constantly steel and attract talent that can bring value and ideas. When you become an indispensable brand, there will always be a job waiting for you and it will be your choice whether to take it or not. We tend to view the recruiting process as a push, instead of a pull, which is a major problem. By creating a blog, joining social networks, and putting a profile page on various job boards, you are in fact allowing your brand to be found (searchable on Google, etc). If you have the proper mix of abilities that are relevant to your industry, combined with differentiators, you will not have to worry about this recession. Those that worry are the ones that havent caught onto the personal branding practice and I hope they are either reading this or are in the midst of rethinking their job approach.

How To Identify Your Ideal Customer Who You Serve It can feel so exciting when you come up with an idea for a business. Whether it be a product or service. The mind can shift to all the wonderful possibilities, how much money youâre going to make and the fun stuff like design, graphics, a logo and so on. But who is going to actually put their hand in their pocket for that product or service, and why should they buy? This is where you need to identify your ideal customer, the person who will pay you to solve their problem through your product or service. Regardless of what idea you come up with, to turn it into a sustainable and profitable business, it needs to solve a problem people will pay for. Although I refer to product or service throughout, you are selling results. Identify The Problem The idea for a product or service tends to come first because itâs something thatâs impulsive and can just pop up in your mind one day. From that idea, you will need to identify the need for it, if people are willing to pay for it, and if there is a big enough pool of people to sell to. Whatever you create should be for a specific group of people, you canât serve everyone⦠Understanding the problem (pain points) of your customers and knowing who they are is essential. Without this knowledge, youâll find it difficult to attract, retain and convert them. Create Your Customer Avatar Most successful entrepreneurs will be able to tell you who their customer avatar is. The avatar has a name, face, and story. Now although creating your customer avatar can involve a lot of research, thinking and reflecting, its fun too! Think of it as writing a book or short story and you have to come up with fictional characters, thatâs what this process involves. The great thing is, you can have more than one. For example, I serve both men and women in my business so I have two. When you create your customer avatar, answer these questions to make them come to life and then create a short story from it that clearly describes who they are. Are they male or female? What is their name? How old are they? Where do they live? Do they have children? What is their marital and employment status? What do they do (business owner / in a career)? How much money do they make? What matters most in their life? What characteristics and interests do they have? What are their values and goals? Where are they in life right now? Think about how they may be feeling. What are their concerns? What do they want to overcome and achieve in the next six to twelve months? Who do they want to become? What are their problems, pain points, struggles, frustrations, and challenges? These are the thing(s) they would be prepared to purchase, invest in to solve the problem they are facing. When you go through this question, go deep. Hereâs what I mean by this. If your customer avatar wants to lose weight, you really want to get to the root of why this is, what they have or havenât done to date. From here you should be able to paint a picture on what is really holding them back from losing weight. Your Solution With your customer avatar in mind, think about how your product or service will make their business/life better. This relates to the benefits it will provide, the results that will derive from it and the transformation that will take place. Of those benefits, pinpoint the number one result and the ones that are going to get your customer excited and think âthis is a must have for me.â Thatâs what you want, not a nice to have, but a must have product or service. How can your customer, experience, get a sample of your solution? Itâs like going to the supermarket and they have samples of something new for you to taste. Or when you go into a department store and they have someone with perfume or aftershave you can try. Identify ways to entice your customers. Articulate Your Solution Now you understand the problem of your customer and know who they are, you need to be able to clearly articulate the solution you have created for them. When you create content for your audience, whatever it might be, write directly to them. Visualize your customer avatar as you write to build that connection, one that resonates. This will help you to market effectively. The know, like and trust factor that leads your prospective customers to your door. Donât focus on features, instead stay focused on the benefits. The features relate to the deliverables of your product or service. The benefits relate to the results they can expect, the change. Paint a picture, of what their life or business could be like from working with you. What they will walk away with after a specific timeframe. If you have a physical product, focus on how itâs going to make them feel, describe any transformation they can expect and how it may make their life easy e.g. save time. On a final note, keep in mind that your customer avatar and target market will evolve. Because the marketplace changes, and so do we as individuals. Our ideas evolve and change with us. It doesnât have to be perfect or set in stone and this is always something you can go back to and adapt. If you find that your customer avatar is an extension of who you are or your former self, itâs normal. The reason behind this is you really understand their pain points and what they are going through because there is a personal connection.

Resume Renovations As youve probably surmised by now, I look at a lot of resumes. While many resumes adequately explain a job seekers job responsibilities, few elaborate on the accomplishments within those responsibilities. And lets face it. Many people perform similar jobs with similar competencies. What makes each person unique is the success he or she brought to those positions, not the day to day tasks that hundreds of others may be trained to do. Consider these typical resume statements from job seekers who probably have a great deal to offer employers, but are not getting that message across in their documents.Answered questions that pertained to each customers needs.Undoubtedly customer service is critical for many positions. But this statement tells the reader little other than that a function of the job was answering questions. Hiring managers want to know what was the volume of the inquiries, how long did it take to resolve customer issues and how did that timeframe compare to the company s standards. Are there any powerful examples of how an irate client was satisfied, and were any processes put in place to address redundant questions so time could be freed up to work on more complex issues?Develop and execute promotional opportunities.Great! Tell me more! What types of campaigns and what were the results? Did the promotions drive revenues, capture a new niche, or take market share away from a competitor? What was going on in the company before these promotions were developed and what is happening now as a result of them?Prepared weekly reporting on equipment performance.Why were the reports prepared and who received them? Was the report used by senior management for forecasting or decisions on vendor contracts? Was any money or time saved as a result of these reports and if so, how much?Develop business plans and strategies to build rapport and solicit new business accounts.Sounds important. What were the results? Was new business secured, and if so, what was the p ercent increase in accounts from last year until now and what were the revenues associated with that new business? Were creative strategies or guerrilla marketing techniques leveraged to obtain the business?Break away from the day to day of your work experience and strive to showcase the unique, memorable, creative, and above and beyond moments. You will quickly rise to the top of the resume pile and secure more interviews faster.

How to deal with a bad boss - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog The uncontested, number-one reason why people are unhappy at work is bad management. Nothing has more power to turn a good work situation bad than a bad boss. Sadly there are quite a lot of them around. A recent British study accused 1 in 4 bosses of being bad, while a Norwegian study said 1 in 5. According to workplace researchers Sharon Jordan-Evans and Beverly Kaye, when people quit, they don?t leave a company, they leave a bad boss. Surveys show that up to 75% of employees who leave their jobs do so at least in part because of their manager. In the exit interview dutifully performed by HR, employees may say that they got a higher salary or a shorter commute out of the switch, but in anonymous surveys the truth comes out: My bad boss drove me away. The reason that having a bad manager is so bad for us is that managers have power over us. Managers can change our work situation, give us good or bad tasks, and, ultimately, fire us. This power imbalance is why a good relationship with your manager is so important. The good news is that you are not powerless. You dont need to quietly accept a bad boss quite the contrary. If your boss is not treating you and your co-workers right, you have a responsibility to do something! And in many, many cases, bosses long for feedback from their employees they want to know what they can do better. Here are the steps you must take, to deal with a bad boss. 1: Assume no bad intentions. While some of the things your boss does may make you unhappy at work, it is probably not why they do it. Until proven otherwise, assume that they mean well and are simply unaware of the effects of their actions. 2: Classify your boss Which of these three categories does your bad boss fall into? Doesn?t know hes bad. Knows hes bad and wants to improve. Doesn?t want to know hes bad or doesn?t care. Most managers who make their employees unhappy are simply unaware of this fact?nobody has ever told them that what they do isn?t working. Some managers know that what they?re doing is wrong and are trying to improve?these people need our support and good advice in order to do better. Pauls new boss was constantly critical and never showed any appreciation for a job well done. In weekly status meetings, he would only comment on deviations from the budgets and demand explanations and actions plans. Well, Paul doesnt stand for that kind of thing. He kindly but firmly let his new boss know that in order to be motivated he also needed positive recognition for the things he did well. The result: Over the course of three months, the boss has come around and now freely and happily comments on the great results Paul is getting. At their last status meeting before Christmas, the boss even spent five minutes praising Pauls department for the work theyve done and the results theyve achieved. But this may not always work. I used to be the Public Relations Coordinator and Editor for a local non-profit organization. A couple of months before I threw in the towel my grandmother became very ill. After a phone call from a family member I was told to come to her bedside, as death was imminent. I told my boss that I needed to leave for a family emergency and explained the situation and how close I was to my grandmother. My boss replied, ?Well, she?s not dead yet, so I don?t have to grant your leave. ?And, I was told to complete my workday. Suffice to say I did not finish my workday. (source) Theres also the third category of boss: Those who steadfastly refuse to acknowledge that they?re bad leaders, or who revel in the fact that they make people unhappy at work. These managers are usually beyond helping and may never learn and improve. Get away from them as fast as you can. 3: Let your boss know what they could do better Presuming your boss is in category 1 or 2, you must let them know what they can improve. This can be scary because of the power imbalance between managers and employees, but it needs to be done. Managers aren?t mind readers, and they need honest, constructive feedback. 4: Do it sooner rather than later. If you have a bad relationship with your boss it?s vitally important that you do something about it as soon as possible. It can be tempting to wait, thinking that it might get better on its own, or that your boss might be promoted, transferred or leave. Don?t wait sooner is better. 5: Choose the right time to talk. In the middle of a meeting or as a casual hallway chat are not the best ways to approach the subject. Make sure you?re in a quiet undisturbed place and have time to talk about it fully. 6: Explain the effects on you and the effects on your work. Be specific and tell your manager, ?When you do X it makes me do Y, which results in Z. If you can show how his actions reduce motivation, hurt business, or increase expenses, youre more likely to convince him that this is a serious issue. 7: Suggest alternatives. If you can, explain what they could do instead and why that would be better. Suggesting specific alternatives makes it easier to make positive changes. 8: Make a plan and follow up. Agree to follow up at a later date, to evaluate the new situation. 9: Praise your manager when he gets it right. When your boss gets it right, remember to praise them. Many managers never receive praise because people mistakenly believe that praise should only flow from managers to employees. You may be nervous about approaching your manager and giving them advice, but good managers are truly grateful for constructive, useful feedback, and will appreciate any opportunity they get to learn how to do a better job. 10: If all else fails: Get out of Dodge If youve tried to make it work and cant, its time to get away. You can go for another job inside the company (with someone you know to be a great boss), or?you can quit and go work somewhere else. And you? What about you? Have you ever dealt with a bad boss?
